Measuring for covers around the kitchen

Kitchen tables and stovetops take a lot of wear over a winter. We keep fitted covers for both on our kitchen shelf, alongside heat diffusing plates and storage keepers. A cover that fits well starts with a tape measure held straight across the hard edge, without guessing or adding extra inches.

How an elasticized cover grips a table

An elasticized cover works like a fitted sheet on a mattress. The vinyl top goes over the flat wood or laminate, and the gathered pocket pulls beneath the edge to hold itself fast. That means you measure the tabletop itself, not the cloth. Do not add extra inches for a drop. If your tape measures across a round breakfast table from rim to rim, you look for a cover labeled for that diameter. A flat tablecloth needs overhang to hang straight, but a fitted vinyl cover with an elastic hem only puckers and gathers slack if you choose one larger than the wood beneath it.

Corners, curves and the extra leaf

Shape matters as much as width. A round table takes one number across the middle, while an oval or an oblong table takes two numbers, length and width. An oval cover put over an oblong table leaves the corners bare, and an oblong cover pulled over an oval top bunches into empty pockets at the ends. The center leaf changes everything too. A kitchen table with its extension leaf inserted is a different size from the same table pushed together for daily breakfast. A fitted cover fits one arrangement or the other, so decide where the table stays before writing down the numbers.

Matching burner covers to your stove

Burner covers sit on a cold stovetop when meal prep is done. They hide the drip pans and give back a patch of counter space for resting a recipe card or a mixing bowl. Electric coils and gas burner grates have entirely different profiles, so a cover built for a flat electric element sits tipped and crooked over a tall iron gas grate. We keep shallow covers for electric ranges and taller lids designed to clear the square corners of gas burners. Set them only on metal that is cold to the touch, and lift them off before turning on a burner.

Deep wells and tall grates

Some older electric ranges feature deep drip wells that sit low beneath the surface, while heavy cast burners rise well above the enameled deck. A standard flat cover might bridge across a recessed well without resting steady on the enamel, or it might teeter on a high center screw. A deep burner cover provides the extra vertical clearance needed to enclose tall hardware completely. If your range has high iron grates that do not lift out easily, measuring the height of the grate from the cooktop deck tells you if you need standard depth or a deeper cover to sit flush.

Spreading heat and minding cold surfaces

A heat diffusing plate does actual work during cooking, unlike decorative covers. It sits between a burner flame and the bottom of a pan, spreading the heat evenly across the metal so a thin skillet does not scorch gravy in one center ring. Once cooking is finished and the range is cold, decorative vinyl table covers and felt game covers can go back to work. Vinyl and felt belong only on cold surfaces. They keep dust off a table and quiet down a game of cards, but they must stay away from lingering stove heat.

Small things that are easy to forget

  • Elastic table covers hold under the rim and require measuring the hard tabletop width without adding drop inches.
  • An oval table requires two measurements across its widest points while a round table requires one diameter measurement.
  • A table with an extension leaf installed requires a larger cover size than the same table closed up.
  • Electric burner covers sit flat over coils while gas covers are shaped to clear raised burner grates.
  • Heat diffusing plates go between the heat source and a pan to spread warmth across the bottom.

Keeping a kitchen tidy and ready

Measuring the hard surface takes only a minute with a tape measure. Our kitchen pages hold fitted covers, game felts, and storage keepers gathered under labels like WalterDrake and Miles Kimball. Getting the width and shape right the first time keeps the top smooth, protects the finish beneath, and leaves the kitchen ready for company.
