Dressing the porch goose through the year

A porch goose changes its clothes as the weather turns outside. Putting on a new outfit is a small Saturday chore, done on the step before the morning gets away from you. We keep a deep closet of outfits under the Gaggleville label, cut for the seasons as they arrive.

Spring rain and summer sun

Wet April grass calls for the raincoat or the gardener hat. Once the garden wakes, you can swap in the bumble bee, butterfly, or strawberry. March brings the lucky leprechaun, and Easter brings the brown bunny. Summer is the fullest part of our closet by far. When the heat settles in, people put on the flamingo, the shark, the hot dog, or the Hawaiian shirt. Uncle Sam takes his turn around the summer holiday, and a bikini carries the hottest afternoons until the yard starts to dry out.

Autumn leaves through the winter chill

September brings out the football jersey, the sunflower, and the squirrel. When October arrives, the pumpkin, candy corn, and scarecrow go up by the walk. The scarecrow and fall leaf stay on through the November holiday table, since those autumn pieces carry the porch straight into the cold. Winter is the leanest stretch of the year. You put the jolly santa or the reindeer on for December. After the holiday passes, the bird stands in a warm sweater until the snow clears and the mud returns.

Statues and bundles for the calendar

Three birds share our pages. The large white plastic bird and the small outdoor baby goose both have rubber stoppers underneath to hold sand against the wind, while the desktop goose sits on a shelf indoors. Each outfit fits one bird, and the page names the size. Getting an outfit bundle settles several holidays at once. A bundle puts pieces in your hall closet ahead of the season, even if it includes an unexpected pattern you might not have picked out one by one.
