Potato peelings and wet silverware have a way of finding their way into the plumbing before anyone notices. We have kept this simple stainless wire strainer in the Miles Kimball pages because it sits flat, lets wash water through, and catches what should not go down. Lift it by the rim to empty it straight into the scrap pail.

Stainless steel wire

Woven mesh catches fine bits before they reach the pipe. The metal resists rust even when left sitting under running tap water through a long afternoon of washing canning jars.

Wide flat rim

The smooth flange rests flat across the drain basin so scraps cannot slide underneath. It lifts out easily by the edge when it comes time to shake the grounds into the compost.

Rinses clean

Tap it against the inside of the trash can to knock debris loose, then run it under hot water. It can go straight into the dishwasher rack along with the evening plates.

Useful across the house

Set one over the utility basin in the basement where muddy boots get scrubbed, or let it catch hair in the washroom sink. It stays right where it is dropped.
